Cardiothoracic Nursing texts

Hi there

I have finished my nursing degree and about to go to a Cardiothoracic surgical ward in August. I was wondering from this forum is there a particular text books regarding Cardiothoracic surgical nursing that I should consider to buy? I see there are many texts however would like to know which is the best one that explains certain cardiac disorders etc

Look forward to your reply

Question Re: Cardiothoracic Nursing texts

This is exactly the same question that brought me to this message board. I had hoped to find some suggestions. In my search, this one looked good.... Manual of Perioperative Care in Adult Cardiac Surgery, 4th edition, by Robert M. Bojar. ISBN 1405104392

Does anyone else have this book? If so, your opinion.

Thanks!

Cool Re: Cardiothoracic Nursing texts

Have that book and I love it. Welcome to probably the most difficult and challenging nursing outt there. I have been a nurse for 1 year and started out on a CTICU floor. I have learned alot and loved it mostly everyminute of it. You have to be on top of things q minute. Read as much as you can and always ask questions.

Re: Cardiothoracic Nursing texts

Nedanurse, I'm entering the CSICU and begin orientation in a week. Thanks for the suggestion regarding Bojar's book.

Do you think it would be helpful to also get Thelan's Critical Care Nursing: Diagnosis and Management by Linda Urden et al or do you think the basic med/surg texts should cover the info needed on the ICU? Thanks, Steph

The best book (on any subject) I have had is Cardiothoracic Surgical Nursing by Betsy Finkelmeier - love it.

Re: Cardiothoracic Nursing texts

Anyone have any other "must have" suggestions as far as books geared toward Cardiac, Thoracic, and/or Vascular surgery nursing? I can be reimbursed by my employer for up to $500/yr. for books, periodicals, membership fees in organizations, CE's (which in our state we can now obtain online/mostly freebies), so I'm hoping to build a good library of applicable books. I have found the Bjhor book to be very informative since I've been reading it and highly suggest it. Just ordered Mosby's 2007 Nursing Drug Reference (title?) book as well. Mainly due to the fact that I get tired of lifting that monster-sized PDR.

I have that book as well. It's a great resource but it's a little outdated.
