I am new to this board, so forgive me if this topic has already been posted before! I have recently decided to go to nursing school, and I was wanting to get some imput from individuals in the nursing field. I attended a community college right after high school, and I have about 21 credits which will transfer. The particular nursing school I would like to attend only offers a diploma type program. I have an aunt that attended this school, and she was able to get a great job in pediatric nursing. There are a few universities in my area that will also transfer credits from a diploma program for your BSN, so thats always an option later on. I'm just afraid I won't be able to fin a job after graduating from this program. My goal is to become a labor and delivery nurse. I'm now in the banking industry, so this will be a big change, thats why I want to make sure I will be able to find work.

A little background about myself- I am 23, and I have a 6 month old daughter. I have always been interested in pregnancy, and labor and delivery. After having my daughter it sparked my interest even more, so I decided to go for it. Thanks for any advice!!

Well, there are no guarantees.

There are parts of the country where new grads are facing stiff competition for entry-level positions. It may also be difficult to find an L&D job right out of school -- again, lots of competition in some areas.

You might try posting in the forum for your state and inquire about the job conditions there.

Overall, though, if you're flexible in terms of job type, location, and shift, nursing's probably as close to a sure thing as you're going to find in today's turbulent economy.

Will you be getting your LPN? I didn't think they are still doing diploma RNs but maybe I'm wrong. Are you sure that universities will take your previous work toward their BSN? If so, I'd go for it. In my area the demand for nurses is huge. Many hospitals will still hire LPNs but it can be tricky to get in a specific area so if you heart is set only on L&D you may have to wait until you get your ADN or BSN. Good luck, Jules
