Just want to know what you think about my situation. I graduated from nursing school with the highest of hopes and a positive pregnancy test as my graduation present. I started out on a med/surg floor for eight months but left because of the mandatory overtime that happened (I worked 3-11 and could be mandated to work 11-7), this was not working for my pregnant and soon to be new Mommy self. I ended up doing home care for my son's first year because it is very flexible and Mommy friendly. After working there for over a year I returned to a Med/Surg floor for almost two years. I really liked it but, my life got complicated when my son was diagnosed with autism. I got overwhelmed with my schedule and all of his appointments and began to look for flexibility again and a friend of mine told me about a job at a LTC where she worked. I work as an infection control nurse and have 24 flexible hours a week, which works for my family. It is not my dream job, but it is close to home and pays the bills. I have had this position for 18 months. I have been a nurse for five years and have three jobs. Some day I really would like to return to acute care, just becaue I really enjoy it. My question is, how long can a nurse be out of acute care before it is too late to go back? Also, is it okay to switch jobs every couple of years until you find the right fit? Is my career circling the bowl? I don't regret putting the needs of my family first, I just really enjoy being a nurse and someday I hope to get back to doing something I am excited about. Three jobs in five years is not a problem IMHO! There is nothing to say you can't change jobs again. You have to be comfortable at work while remaining true to your home situation. I have worked fulltime since becoming a nurse 16 years ago but have changed jobs and shifts to better suit my family situation. I think you sound like an excellent nurse and an even better Mom.
