Question LVN degree..or just go for my RN?

I was talking with my couselor at school and he asked me what I was heading for & I told him, for my LVN. He suggested not just getting a certificate but a degree, which sounded good, until I got home & was thinking, WOW..why not just go for my RN?? At my school they accept only one time a year for LVN, 30 students out of 150. For RN though, its two times a year and accept 80 each time. I would only need two more classes of prerequistes for RN...uhh..any advice? I have only one problem, is I'm "math nervous"..its not my strongest subjects, its probley one of the reasons why I havne't gone for my RN. I'm good at all other subjects, but me & math..woo.. If anyone else is in the same boat, hey let me know, or any advice will be greatly appreciated. Also..this is my first time in college. I'm 32yrs old & have been a mother for 15 years raising 3 children..so this is all new to me. Anyways...thats a bit about me..

Re: LVN degree..or just go for my RN?

I am currently an LPN for a year and some months now and I wish I would have just gone for my RN degree. I have many college credits from Penn State University and if I had gone for my RN degree I would have been one by now. I think that LPN shcool you get the most clinical experience a lot of hands on experience. But in the long run if you are an RN you have many many job oppurtunities, you can basically pick where you want to work. Lpns have fewer oppurtunities.
I now want to go for my Rn but because of the cost of shcooling I have to hold off until I have enough money and my son who is four is a little older.
Coming from personal experience, I love being an LPN but I wish I had just gone for it all and became an Rn!!!!

I think it depends on the area you live in and how long the usual wait is to get in. Ive been an LPN for a year and Im starting the LPN to RN bridge program in January. It was a great choice for me because I was able to get into the LPN program and actually finish school before I even would have STARTED the Rn program due to the waiting lists. I was able to work and make a pretty good living while I finished my pre reqs and now Im going to bridge over to RN and it will take just under a year. My local community college just put the transition/bridge program online this past year so it makes it very convenient. I work in home health so I will be able to get a lot of school work done on my laptop while Im at work. I only have to go to clinical once a week and to campus for midterms and finals. Besides that we have online assignments, discussions, and weekly quizzes. I think it will work out great.

Ill never regret getting my LPN first bc it was only a year and I had that much under my belt. Im not sure I could have made it thru the entire generic RN program due to financial reasons, but now Im able to reach my goal. There is more than one way to get to the same goal sometimes! Good luck with whatever you do. Regardless, when its all said and done you will still be an RN. Can u apply to both programs? I suggest keeping ur options open by applying to all the local LPN and RN programs so u have a better chance of getting in sooner rather than later.

I know exactly where you are coming from. I dreaded math, and failed it through middle school. I almost went for my LPN because of my fear of Chemistry. I am currently in Chemistry, and it isn't nearly as bad as I thought. (I'm getting a B+) If you want to go the RN route, then by all means give it your best shot. Stand up to your fear of math, it is a confidence booster, and you will win. Best of luck to you. (I'm 33)
