Hi,
I need some advice on my future/nursing options. I am currently finishing my pre-req's for nursing school at a CC, and my original plans were to go straight into a BSN program to obtain my degree.

In the meantime, I attended college previously where I was an intended social work major. When my father became ill, I left school moved home, and my whole life/situation changed. I decided to change my major, and go from there. Since I already have previous college courses/credit/hours under my belt, I am starting to think it may be in my best interest to obtain a BS in something, because I believe I am only a few semesters away from having a BS degree. (my advisor is reviewing my transcripts). My plans were to apply to the nursing program for the Spring, but I just may be working toward something else. Also, i know that I want to eventually go to Grad school. This is where my other dilemma comes in.
It seems that no matter what, I am still going to have to do a 2 year program in order to obtain my RN license ,in order to go to grad school. I am in NC, and there aren't any programs that will allow you to obtain your MSN without being an RN first. It makes since. I guess this all means that if i obtain my BS in another field, I will still have to go to an ADN program to become licensed in order to fulfill my career goals of becoming an advanced practice nurse. I am 24, and it seems like a lot to me? UNC chapel-hill has an accelerated BSN program, which is 14 mo, and only accepts once a year. By the time I finished with the first degree, the deadline will have passed since they start in May every year. So that means I will have to wait ANOTHER year to apply for that program , IF I am accepted then. The program there is competitive. Just unsure how to approach all of this?
I hope all of this makes sense...if anyone can offer any advice I will greatly appreciate it!

Have you completed all of your prerequisites? If not that could hold you over while waiting the year to get in. Find out all of the requirements for the accelerated program and make sure you will have everything completed by the due date.

The associate RN is not a bad idea either. I would say apply to both when you have met their requirements. If your goal is to get your BSN you can always go back and complete that at a university.

You may want to consider that once you get your 4 year degree that you will no longer qualify if you do qualify for any state grants at least not where I live which is my dilemma. Decide what's most important to you

I will be done with my pre-req's at the end of the fall semester. The 14 mo. accelerated program I looked into starts in May, but I am afraid I will not be finished with the B.S. until the end of the summer session. So that means I will just wait and go for the accelerated BSN next year. I have done the math, and I will still finish around the same time, as if I had gone straight BSN 24 mo program. I agree with you though, i think I will apply to both and see what happens. Thanks again!
