Need Information - how to study RN online

hello, i need information on how to study a degree in Nursing online.

my cousin studied her High School in the Philippines and she's planning to enroll in an online nursing school to become an RN in the States. she's already an American citizen. we want to know all the details she needs to start her study in any online nursing school..
  1. what course should she take (does she need to take LPN first or can she go straight to AS-RN?)
  2. the prerequisite subjects to study RN
  3. other documents she needs to gather
  4. any other info we need to know
she's in Japan right now and wants to take her prerequisite/minor subjects so by the time she goes to California, she can already start her RN study.

anyone help us here? thanks.

Re: how to study RN online

I don't know of any completely online nursing programs. THe problem with that (if they exist) is that you can't practice nursing skills (assessment, foleys, suctioning, etc.) online.

She might be able to take pre reqs online, but not a complete nursing program. Pre-reqs depend on the school, but usually you've got chemistry, anatomy & physiology, general english & math classes, I also had to take a math class specific to nursing math, psychology, sociology, medical ethics, etc.

Hi
need to get LPN first, and check with the online school you select for additional classes, she might look into getting her LPN before coming to the States? as might be easier to get into a LPN program? you really need to do an online search of the availalbe programs to see what might be a good fit and realize that they can change requirements often. and to find out how they would look at nursing education from out of the US.

i think the one she'll be studying online will be the theoretical parts of nursing only. the practicum would be done separately. she's asking me what subjects should she take while she's still not in the States so by the time she gets there, she could already start with the formal RN study.

thanks for the reply. =)

Re: how to study RN online

Lets start over from the beginning with your question.

She may be able to complete some of the pre-reqs for a nursing program here, but the pre-reqs are different for the different schools. She would be much further ahead by just appyling directly to a BSN program and go in as a freshman as she would be doing. In the US, she has the option of going for a two year degree, as you may read in some of the posts here. However, they are not two year programs by the time that one is done since they do have pre-reqs that must be completed before any program will consider accepting her. These two year programs eaily become three to four year programs but without the distinction of getting the BSN when she is done. With the BSN program and starting it from the beginning, then she gets the full four year degree and does not have any pre-reqs that need to be done first.

Either way, she is going to need to get an evaluation of her high school diploma first to see where it is with the high school programs here.

I would not even attempt any of the courses on-line until she knows what she is doing. More than likely she will not credit for them as well. CA is also very strict with any on-line programs, especially for nursing.

She needs to apply for the four year program at a university and just follow what they have in their program. That would her best bet.

Please check out the posts that we have on the International Forum for more specifics. She did attend school overseas so she will need to have her high school program evaluated as well as take placement exams here first as well.

Re: how to study RN online

The AS program makes no sense for her as she does not have any credits that she can use, she will be starting from Day One and be going to school for 3 to 4 years. Would go straight for the BSN.

CA also has a several year wait for most of the RN programs here. Would also not consider the LVN program as there are not that many jobs available and again she will need to have the pre-reqs done for most of these programs.

Fastest way is a straight BSN, and nothing short of that should be considered.
