I would call HR at the hospital where you're interested in working, and tell them what you'd like to do, and go from there.

Usually the hospitals have pre-determined schedules and it will say when they need you (am, afternoon, graveyard) and if they need a FT or PT employee. Apply for what is closest and once you've gone through the hiring process, they will ask you what you want your schedule to be (if you have any restrictions due to school, family, etc.) I don't think it's proper etiquette to talk about it until later.

As a hospital nurse recruiter, I would encourage you to be honest about your availability up front. Most hospitals have "casual" or "per-diem" positions that would allow you to make your own flexible schedule. If you wait until you're offered a position, and the department isn't able to accomodate you, the offer will be rescinded and you will have wasted everyone's time. I would only apply for part-time or per diem positions and be honest about your availability when you are interviewed.

I agree with Jami the recruiter. The best way for a nurse to be in charge of their own schedule is to work per diem in the hospital, or sign on with a nursing agency.
