Nurses with Hepatitis C

What happens if someone wants to go into nursing but has Hep C? My neighboors daughter asked me because I have relatives in Healthcare, but they don't know. Would a hospital hire them and then just take precautions? Or would their workmen's comp not allow that? Anyone know? Would be a waste of time to go to school if she can't get hired.

Hepatitis C is a non-issue. The nurse does not even have to tell anyone she has it.

Hep C testing is done by most employers when the person goes for their physical. You got to be honest about it and tell them. We have a couple nurses who work on my unit who have Hep and they have no limitations on their care. Universal precautions are just that....universal.

I've never worked at any place that required employees to submit to Hep C testing. However, I've worked with quite a few highly competent people over the years who freely admit to being positive for HBV or HCV.

Re: Nurses with Hepatitis C

A friend of mine who went to work at a local hospital, found out that she had Hep C because it was part of her pre employment workup. (She's been a nurse since the dark ages, like me) Fortunately she received treatment and still is virus free. I work for the government and they also test for hep C on employment.
