WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 -- Despite safe and effective vaccines, American adults are leaving themselves wide open to a host of preventable -- and serious -- diseases, the CDC said today.

Data from last summer's National Immunization Survey -- the first to include adults -- shows the vaccines are neglected by most adults, according to Anne Schuchat, M.D., director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.
