The hospital I work at is now in the process of filing for critical access status. Another hospital that is comparable in size to us was on the verge of closing it's doors and they got the critical access status and in the first year they showed (I have been told) a $400,000 profit. That may sound like beans to some, but it was enought to keep this hospital a float.
Some of the down sides include, having yearly state inpectiions, along with JCAHO, and conforming to states rules. You can only have so many beds available for inpatients, outpaitient observation and such.
Critial access allows the hospital to be compensated at a higher rate from medicare and medicaide.
