nursing care as far as nutrition and supplements for a patient with small dime sized lateral malleolus wounds would include?....

im working on a homework assigment... and so far all i have is an increase in protein (found in meat, fish, eggs, poultry)...

any other suggestions? what type of supplements would be beneficial to a patient with a wound?

thanks ladies and gents! wounds are truly my headache!!!

Consider high protein, high calorie diet w/ supplements. Encourage fluids. Vitamins A, B complex, C and K.

In addition to protein and multivitamin supplementation, I also like to use Vitamin C and 220-mg elemental zinc supplements for a limited time---I've been able to get some wounds resolved that were resistant to every topical cream, ointment, dressing, and treatment on the market. I learned about zinc from a friend who was an herbalist, of all things; the caveat being that you need to D/C the zinc after four to six weeks, because it can cause copper deficiency if used for too long. But it can perform miracles on stubborn wounds..........I have a resident at my facility who was admitted with a chronic pressure ulcer on his coccyx and a MRSA-infected, old g-tube site that would NOT close up no matter what we did to it.

Well, guess what.....six weeks of treatment with zinc plus the usual Vitamin C and multiple vitamin/minerals, and the wounds not only healed, they have never returned. It's been over a year since the gentleman even had a bad skin tear, and his arms and legs used to rip open if you so much as breathed on him too hard. Pretty amazing stuff, if you ask me........I remember the resident's doctor was really skeptical, but he prescribed it at my suggestion, figuring the poor resident didn't have much to lose.
