Hi all. I've been a ICU nurse for a couple years now, and am now thinking about taking a break from the bedside while our kids are young. It's just too hard trying to figure out day care, schedules, etc. However, I'm trying to explore some part-time work-from-home options within the healthcare field. Does anyone have any ideas? I don't even know where to start, but I know you all can be a wealth of information. I don't think I have enough experience yet to get into legal consulting. I guess I just don't even know what else is out there. Thanks in advance for any info/insight you can share with me!

Think about case management; I've known a couple of people who did that from home.

Medical transcription can also be done from home; I have a friend who does that, though she's not a nurse.

Additionally, some insurance companies have jobs where you can work from home, but they may require regular office hours where you can be uninterrupted.

Just some things to think about!

Insurance companies (United Health) I know for sure and home health or hospice agencies triage nurse. You take calls at home after hours.

I work nights as a staff nurse specifically so that our kids don't have to deal with daycare and we don't have to deal with relying on babysitters. My husband works days and comes home in time to switch off to me; I work through the night and come home in the morning as he's getting the kids ready for school.

I work three nights a week, and it works quite well to have both family time and work; schedules are rarely an issue that way.
