Why do you think so many healthcare workers are mean and arrogant?

Not all of course, but many physicians, nurses, and other health care workers have mean and arrogant personalities.

Why do you think this is?

Is it that....

1. You have to be very competitive to get into medical or nursing school. Competitive people are often cut-throat.

2. The stress of the job causes workers to be cranky and mean.

3. Unhappy people act arrogant to feel better about their lives.

4. Workers learn to be mean from other coworkers. It's a conformity thing.

5. Most people in the world these days lack manners.

Any opinions?

I don't know that its just healthcare workers. I've seen arrogance in people of many different occupations.
I think its everywhere, not specific to just one field.
I think people become that way for different reasons. Some are born or raised with a sense of entitlement, some are stressed, some are misunderstood, and some are just having bad days; I am sure that there are many more reasons that I can't think of for the way people act as they do.
But again, its that way everywhere.

Why do you think so many people in banking are mean and arrogant?
Why do you think so many people in retail are mean and arrogant?
Why do you think so many people in law enforcement are mean and arrogant?
Seriously this is a real problem in these professions and I could name more.

Why is it?

Probably the same reasons.

People from all occupations, socioeconomic classes, genders, cultures, and backgrounds are mean and arrogant.

For example, the vast majority of the family members and visitors at my workplace are not healthcare workers. However, these people are rude, spoiled, demanding, disgusting, disrespectful, pushy, and abusive. The vast majority of motorists on the road are not healthcare workers, but they do mean-spirited things such as cut in front of people, run from the scenes of collisions, flip people off with the middle finger, and act rageful on the roadways.

Let's not generalize about healthcare workers, when people from all nooks and crannies are mean.

Because some people are just mean and arrogant...and some of them happen to work in healthcare...and many other fields.

I had never noticed this tendency. I don't see this at all, most people I work with seem pretty nice. Don't forget that nurses are the most trusted profession!

Holy crap, look at all the snippy defensive responses. May I remind you that I mentioned in my original question as a possible explanation......
" 5. Most people in the world these days lack manners." ... (not just healthcare workers)

Furthermore, if you think that all careers have workers as arrogant as physicians, you need to spend a few weeks in an operating room. The verbal abuse that some surgeons hand out is unsurpassed.

If you're talking about arrogance, physicians and nurses/other healthcare workers are really not in the same class.

Shoot, some surgeons deserve a class of their own.
