Re: What you get for nurses week

we got a doughnut and coffee reception with our residents, a facility t-shirt and a hand written thank-you note from the administrator. Certainly didn't brake the bank (I work in a small LTC facility) but it was nice

Know this routine... as a young idealist nurse, these little gifts were meaningful. It meant less when a suprvisor who has given me a good evaluation turned and retracted the evaluation after the fact and gave me perhaps the worst eval because I had advocated for a patient. I in essence was "questioning the administration". The resident was a biased and bigoted asian who looked down on blacks and the poor and forgotten wence he came with his family... the poorest of poor.
After that I learned that I had more control over what I knew was right morally, ethically and legally and that my values were not so biased or influenced but from what I learned as I grew up from a parent, church and teachers who inspired me through life and in nursing school. To this day, I am a student at age 57 in a catholic college working on my MSN, not a catholic but a lutheran who has great faith and beliefs.
What is imporotant is that I can recognize myself and not rely on others to reward me. A patient, a child or anyone else may give me kind, thoughtful words, but even the most angriest or hostile patient may make me see something good in myself for the right reason.
Stuff the t-shirt and make it one of many pillows and "things" as a reminder that tangibles are not necessary rewards, just things when you now in your heart you did right and good.

At the hospital I work at they've come up with the brilliant idea to not acknowledge Nurse's Day/Week anything at all. They will be acknowledging Hospital Week...they'll have a barbeque, ice cream and some other really forgettable activity for the ENTIRE staff...no mention, not one word of Nurse's Day. It really sends a message loud and clear to the Nurses where we fall on the pecking order.

Well, good grief, there's that! I had forgotten that we did too! Thanks for the reminder.

Our floor manager made us all these really great cookies and put them in pretty wrappers with a thank you. The hospital bought us Pizza Hut one night and we all got tote bags no logo with the phrase "Nurses Week 2008"

Hmmm...
I was given a pen, hand sanitizer, lotion, a small candle, and a thank you.
Also, we worked short too! But that is an everyday gift at our facility.
Tuesday I had clinical at one of the local hospitals, and they invited us and the rest of my group to join thier celebration. They had a free lunch buffet, punch, cake, and new organizers for all of us. I thought that was very kind of them.

Hmm lets see
Sunday: pizza for baylor shift and night nurses
Monday: Ice cream party maybe for day and night nurses
Tuesday and Wed: something but I can't remember b/c i wasn't there
Thursday: We had a huge pot luck dinner on the floor. Management bought zaxby's chicken fingers and a big cake. Then everyone brought a cover dish.
Friday: they had an award ceremony to nominate a nurse that was voted the best that year or something.. refreshments
Doctors also all brought cakes, cookies, candy ect..
My DON gave us all little red tote bags and a nice big umbrella... both with hospital logos of course. Oh and I got a cup with candy in it.

Our gift???? Joint Commision showed up unannounced. We passed with flying colors, but none of the staff got even a "Thank You" or "Good job" not to mention not even a
"Happy Nurses' Day!"

I have no idea what possessed them to do it, but this year, we got pocket knives. I'm hoping no one who is armed has a mental meltdown.
