Re: What I Love About Nursing Is....

i love the fact that you don't become a static person.. you learn A LOT of things everyday, new knowledge, new experiences, you meet new people, which all continue to shape you as a person.. I also love how you get to teach patients and make a difference in their lives and at the same time, you learn from them as well.. you get to be a part of their lives and even if it is a short while, you still will make a difference no matter how small it may be. You know that a few years from know, they won't recognize you anymore or recall your name but you know that the kindness and the care you gave them will be remembered..

Thumbs up Re: What I Love About Nursing Is....

What I love about nursing is...

I get to "care" for my patients instead of just "cure" them.

When I took A&P in high school, I was convinced I would be a surgeon! After years of business school, returning to school for pre-med, shadowing docs, and volunteering at different facilities, I changed my mind! I decided I preferred nursing to the medical profession -- to my surprise!

I currently work in med/tele, and (sadly) I don't get to care for my patients as much as I like to. I spend so much time charting, calling other departments or doctors, faxing orders, etc... I do make time for my patients, but I don't get as much as I'd like. I guess that's just the nature of the beast

I've recently been offered a home health job (though I haven't started yet). When I talked to the DON, I had become disillusioned with hospital care because I'm not able to provide as much "care" as I'd like to. She said that's the great thing about HH (and went on to give me examples). I can only hope it will be as wonderful as I imagine!

I also love that nursing provides endless opportunities! I get bored easily and like to move around. (See also: the Peter Principle.) In medicine, once you do a residency, you can only move in a linear fashion in that path. I love knowing that I can ANYWHERE in nursing

Re: What I Love About Nursing Is....

I am constantly amazed at what my patients teach me! How the human will to live is on display if I only care to look for it!

Re: What I Love About Nursing Is....

what i love in nursing is that, i have the ability and skills to deal with people who are sick. being flexible at all times and able to deal with different kind of attitude.=) and most especially at the end of the shift, hearing patients and families saying "thank you". it is really a relieve after working hard for 8 or even 16hrs day=)
and of course, getting paid during pay day and spending it for shopping and whatever you want to.haha=) and also, seeing folks of patient's or even our very own patients in the mall and still recognize you.=)

Re: What I Love About Nursing Is....

The ability to make a change in someones life. The satisfaction when a scared elderly woman holds your hand and tells you you are an angel just because you took the time to get her an extra blanket and tuck her in.
The times when you coax, cajole, push, pull and scrap with rehab patients, and when they are walking out the door, they give you a hug and say.."I couldnt have done it without you." You tell them, of course you could have! But it still feels GREAT!!!!!!!!!
Feeling pride in my vocation. What do you do?
I...am a nurse.

Yes!!!! a thousand times yes!!!!! That is what I love too.

Since becoming a nurse 5 years ago, I've basically fallen in love with seniors. (some can be very difficult for a variety of reasons, but overall, I love taking care of them...I better because I routinely have 4 out of my 5 patients in their 80's!!!)

As a side note, over the years, I've made a point of pointing out elderly people to my kids and commenting about how "cute" they were. The point being for my kids to #1) Notice older adults, #2) Appreciate them and #3) be aware of their welfare (open heavy doors, offer them your seat, etc.).

All my efforts have paid off because my 15-yr-old daughter chooses to do all her (required) volunteer hours at the local senior center and LOVES IT! And my two teenage sons have actually pointed out "cute" elderly people without being solicited by me at all.

Basically, as my kids say, "Old people grow on you, don't they Mom?"

I couldn't agree more! and I know most of my fellow nurses feel the same way!

Re: What I Love About Nursing Is....

hi nurses!! it's been a long time since i last logged in here. i became very busy these past few days because of the filing of the documents for the licensure examination here in the Philippines. this is the moment we have all been waiting for. After four long years of hard work, exhausting clinical rotations, ncp's, case studies, finally, here we are, about to take the examination that will evaluate each and every graduate of BSN regarding her knowledge on the course.

what i love about nursing???

sleepless nights d/t case study, drug study, case presentations and then talk with your friends during breaks
5 cups of coffee a day
group studies
long exams
energy draining lectures and clinical duties
the smile from our patients
their simple "thank you" even if you just raised their side rails
their mood swings during episodes of acute pain
or simply being their for client and rendering care without asking anything from return.
