Here is the link to NSO.

Please help a newbie: Do hospitals typically pay a nurse's malpractice premium?

Hello, Freedom42

You are normally covered under your hospital's liability insurance. But, I advise, as do many here, to purchase an individual liability policy. It is just wise and makes good sense to protect your license at all costs.

As pointed out above, NSO is a good organization. You can receive free quotes online. Just feed in the information regarding your state, licensure and education. Reasonable rates, too.

Thanks. Does the individual policy provide extra coverage over and above the hospital's policy? Or does it kick in if, say, the hospital's legal counsel refuses to represent you? If you work at a unionized hospital, does the union typically negotiate extra coverage for you?

I appreciate your answering my questions. I aim to become a BSN and am coming from a completely different corporate culture.

You are welcome, Freedom42.

I cannot answer union questions for they are a whole other world for me. Some here might be able to answer these questions.

You cannot go wrong with individual coverage. If you are named in a suit along with other nurses, your hosptial's policy will be covering them as well as you. It could be conceivable that any money paid out would be limited for each defendant. You could be liable for the difference/s. If you carry your own individual coverage, you would be covered for 1,000,000 each claim and up to 6,000,000 aggregate (NSO). The policy is yours alone.

I also am a new grad and I just got insurance from NSO. I was half off because I was a new grad. So the highest coverage which I think was something like 1m/6m was only 45.00 for the first year.
