What do you all think of this??

Went to work the other day and there was a new addition to the unit - a stop light contraption - red light/yellow/green light. It was placed - by administration, with support from our Nurse Manager - at the nurse's station to monitor the noise level at the station. When the noise level prompted the monitor to reach the red light an alarm sounded, notifying the nurses that we should now stop talking and carry on with business.

Well, let me tell you the fuss this created! And rightly so...One of our nurses said that they use these devices in her daughter's 2nd grade class. What happened? The DOCTORS complained (after the nurses did for hours), but the DOCTORS were heard and it was removed.

What a message this sends to me as a supposedly PROFESSIONAL RN. I am highly insulted by this, as are most of my co-workers.

What do you all think????

Wow....I haven't seen one of those since the lunchroom back in third grade! Yeah, I think it's pretty safe to say they are treating the staff like elementary schoolers. That had to be a major morale booster. Sucks that only the doctor's complaining worked though. I generally don't understand why nurse's don't have more influence...I mean considering there is a "mass shortage" you would think that it would give current nurses more power...but I guess I'm living in a dream world. I'm still a student taking prereqs so I haven't been in a hospital setting for very long at all, but it makes no sense that nurses don't get the same respect as doctors. I know that doctors go through some serious schooling, but nurses are just as important to keep hospitals running...and well lets face it, our education isn't exactly easy.

I think a lot of the respect issue stems from who makes the hospital money. Doctors do - nurses cost money. Plain and simple - because that is what hospitals are all about $$$.

That is a sad sad reality. I'm sorry to hear that and I certainly wouldn't want to work for a place like that.

Great question - we - in the MICU do not have a working 12 lead EKG machine. Ours is out for repair - because, get this, no money in the budget for a new one.
