Hello,

I have a goal of obtaining my BSN, and then pursuing other goals within the nursing field after obtaining my BSN. At this point I already have an Associates Degree in General Studies, and I am just about to receive my Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology.

At this poing I will have to go ahead and knock out the science pre-reqs to be admitted into the BSN program, and have been devising an action plan as to how I will go about doing so, I do not need to obtain the degree as fast as possible, but I have been excercising the thoughts of getting into the BSN program after I have the science pre-reqs, and then gain ICU experience, and then ultimately get into advanced studying to become a CRNA.

My only delimma is that I have a 1-year old baby daughter, and mentally I am having some doubts that I will be able to pursue this goal due to the fact that you have to invest a great deal of time with children. I want to be the best father that I can for her, and provide everything that she needs, and I feel education and life-long learning is without a doubt the key to being a successful individual.

Sorry for being so lengthy, but I had to explain the situation, and basically wanted to hear the opinions and advice of others who have had similar situations, or are currently dealing with this sort of situation. Also I have heard some rumors that CRNA's are on the decline as far as the need, but I don't see how that has any truth to it, any opinions?

Are you already a nurse? Because it almost sounds like you're saying that with a few science pre-reqs you're going to get ICU experience and then get into advanced studying to become a CRNA. I'm a bit confused by your post. Sorry.

I think it's great that your focus is going to be your child. That should be priority #1. Becoming a ADN/BSN/CRNA is going to be time consuming and challenging.

I understand your concerns about raising a child. Sounds like you are a single dad. Parenting is tough as a single person either way.

One thing to think about is the important lessons you will be teaching your child by persuing YOUR dreams. Maybe not now at one year old but certainly in the future. You will be showing your daughter that hard work leads to sucess, that in order to get the things we want in life we have to be willing to work for them. You will be showing her that anything is possible with hard work. A work ethic is a good thing.

Don't give up your dreams . As you've said you aren't in a great hurry. Take one science course at a time. Take any core courses you may still need and once she is in pre school or kindergarten you can do your clinicals.

Many hospitals will hire you in ICU right out of school. Get your needed experience there and then move onto CRNA school.

I think your little girl will be proud of her daddy for all his hard work.

Part of caring about your child means seeing you can provide for them. I missed my children's toddler years because I was either working or going to school and I regret it. But I'm at least able to focus on their school years now.
Of course, I couldn't have had a husband who actually worked so I could stay home with the kids.

Just start taking classes for the BSN. You know your limits. I would start with just taking one or two classes and see how things are working, you might be able to do more or you might just stay with 1 or 2 classes until she is older. Your main goal should be to make the best grades possible so even if you can take on 4 classes, if your making C's it isn't worth it anyways.

Good luck. Your an inspiration for your daughter! Sometimes we parents have to make sacrifices, but the end result is definatly worth it.

I am taking classes, been accepted into a nursing program and I have 3 children. The oldest is 10. Let me tell you this is a most positive experience for my children. They cannot wait until my grades are posted on the internet, and always ask if I am studying. I study at their ball games, pool time, ect. I have to tell them today I got a B on an exam instead of an A. They will give me a hard time!!
