Update on the anoxic baby

I called the NICU this morning and spoke with the resident. It doesn't look good. The baby has brain stem function only, withdraws to pain only. He is trying to breathe on his own and is sucking on the ET tube but no other reflexes. The doc said that he will probably make it off the vent but there will not be much higher brain function.

Can you link me to the original post Tazzi? I can't find it and want to read the story.

I'm sorry about the baby.

Don't know how to do that, Steph. Monday night a newborn was brought in with CPR in prog. Footling breech shot out at the medic but got stuck with both arms above his head. He was trapped for 15 minutes and came out blue and pulseless. Revived and transferred to tertiary care.

Tazzi - it sounds like you did everything that could be done for this poor little baby.

Oh dear . . .. what a terrible predicament for the medic.

I do Ob . . . I just don't like it because of the way things turn on a dime. I like ER better.

Re: Update on the anoxic baby

I'm terribly sorry to hear that, Tazzi. My prayers to the family. They will need much strength and support.

I have cared for 2 similar babies. One went home with her parents, both of whom were RNs. She had excellent care and was a beautiful child, but was never aware of anything around her. The other was discharged to a care facility, as the family could not provide the needed care. She was readmitted repeatedly because she lacked the ability to maintain her body temperature. So sad.

the first one made it even though he was premature but his brother only lived a couple of weeks
