tell me about the world of risk management

Hello,
I think this is the right forum for this question: What are the qualifications for an RN to get into risk management in the hospital setting? And to any nurses that work in this department: Do you enjoy it? What is your role and responsibilities? I am really interested in risk management and wanted to get some feedback on this world. I am an RN and have been one for 9years, with six of those years in the ER. thanks for your replies.......

Re: tell me about the world of risk management

I am currently a Director of Risk Mgmt in a hospital setting. ER background is very helpful in RM as you see a broad spectrum of problems. ED is also a prime location for lawsuits. OB is another area that is good experience. Generally speaking 3-5 years experience is necessary. The job entails a variety of tasks that I'm certain differ from one hospital to another and depend on the size of the hospital. My department handles case reviews for physician and ancillary staff concerns, mitigating risk for the hospital (ensuring a safe environment), chart audits, patient complaints. Computer skills another plus in this field (especially Word and Excel). It's definitely an interesting field and never dull. You must be able to adapt to constant change.

Hope this helps,
KSRN-41
