So today I had a pt with an amputated toe...sadly that area was not looking good today...in fact..it looked angry enough to have a demon pop out and spit at me! So I alerted the MD, who alerted the surgeon.

Now sadly...the nurse before me undid the dressing and kept it open for the MD to see...so I didn't see how it was dressed before. Once the surgeon came in...a TOTALLY cool guy, he told me to redress it and she was planned for a surgery soon to get the infection under control.

I was feeling stupid, but I hadn't seen the dressing...so I nicely asked with my biggest smile..."I am so sorry Dr. but how would you like me to dress that, I didn't see how it was done because I wasn't here".

He gave me the biggest grin and took me by the hand..."let me show you the art of dressing my amputee pts.". He told me what to get, and i got it fast...pretty good for an agency nurse! LOL! Then he led me into the room and did the dressing telling me all sorts of interesting complications of amputations and what besides the typical things we look for to keep an eye out for. During that...a fountain of blood came out of her foot as he pressed and sure enough...necrotic bone! He was shocked and said "wow, didn't see that until now! Thanks sweety, if you hadn't asked...this would have been a shock in surgery!".

She was leaving for surgery when I left...and the doc gave me a hug. "really..thank you for asking me about the dressing...some nurses may have been to scared to ask...but thanks to you and your interest and wanting to do things right for my pt....we found out something very important!".

I felt so good!!!!!!! He has always been there with a cheery face at any question I have...even if I think it is beyond dumb! Man...wish that all MD's and nurses were like that!!!!!!!

Lucky you!!! I'm very jealous. Did you ask him if would be willing to be cloned, or atleast give national manadory training for all physicians.

Hey I will ask him next time I see him! LOL!!!!!!!! Actually honestly...I will before or after my next compliment towards him!

He really is one of those 'old school' looking docs...and it is intimiating if you look at him, but the moment he speaks...you know he is a team player that loves his nurses!

All I can say is wow and how wonderful. It is so nice to hear GOOD things about nurse/physician interactions on occasion!

Awesome! I work with several docs (one especially) who are so nice-it makes work so much more pleasant!

OMG! Heck no! A nice married man with 5 kids (yeah he has romance but not with anyone but his lovely wife). No...it is nice just to get along with docs that trust and depend on you professionally! Oh lordie!

He would be more like a mentor that I value and appreciate professionally! Someone I can say "gee thanks for the compliment and help!". Which I may add is sorely needed around this country between MD's and Nurses as I read daily!

Yeah great, romance amist a stinking necrotic bone...oh my idea of Paris in spring???? PLEASE!

(BTW I am married too..two kids, and to one hot gorgeous tallented hero paramedic whom I love each and every day...sometime more than once daily ).

The doctors I see are either very overworked surgeons or very overworked internists. (or very overpaid anesthesiologists ha ha)
They are so tired and to be fair to SOME of them, there are some real lame nurses out there who do not do their job or are not trained well and then the go po'ing off the docs. You know the ones who call the doc for stupid things(the lab was off by .0000001 of a point so they call at 2 am. The other one is the nurse who just cannot do anything without an order(like re-start an infiltrated IV). So, no they have no excuse for acting like baboons with screaming and ranting, but I understand why they get easily annoyed.
I haven't started about the egomaniac one though, they do not deserve our attention.
