Someone messed up.

Hmm, someone has messed up someplace. My daughter gave blood a month or so for the first time. She called me at work (which was upstairs from where they were having the blood drive) and wanted to know if she could. She is under 18. I told her of course, so as a new donar they typed her blood. We got her donar card the other day that showed her as AB+. Well she was the last child and as it happens they had started typing the newborns with their first labs. On her birth certificate it shows her as type B+. Anyone got any ideas here, or do you think someone just screwed up?
I called the blood bank and they checked the unit,, she said it hadnt been sent back or had any discrepancies, and it had been sent out for use a couple weeks ago.

Re: Someone messed up.

Uh.....I think it's a pretty safe bet that people cannot change their blood type, so someone somewhere screwed up.

I would think they probably messed up at birth. I guess you could have it drawn again to find out. The next time might be another type!

Re: Someone messed up.

LOL exactly. But good thing she didnt need blood as a baby huh? That typing would have been what they based the transfusion on.

Actually, the donor's blood would be crossmatched against the recipient's blood (the patient). An ABO incompatability would be found here.

Re: Someone messed up.

Or maybe they sent you home with the wrong baby.... you do read stories like that sometimes.

Sorry... I'm just in an evil mood tonight! I'm guessing the notation on the birth certificate was a typo, just a clerical error.

Congrats to your daughter for being a blood donor!

Intriguing. I'm B+ (my dad was A+)

Hub is A+. (his mom was o- his bro is o-, his sis it o-) don't know what his dad was.

My #1 Kid is A+, don't know what the other one is......
I remember doing this stuff in anat/physiology, but it was so long ago we used pterydactyls for dissection.

I found this.

I have never heard of an infant's blood type being placed on the birth certificate. Are you sure this is the actual state-issued birth certificate, or is it just a "souvenir" type certificate sent home from the hospital? If it is the latter, I would suspect that it is inaccurate.
