I'm graduating in May from Rochester, NY and I don't think I want to stay in the area. I'm looking for advice from anyone that knows about relocating to new place entirely. I'm looking all over especially in California (I like the weather) but I'm not sure how much per hour I should be getting because it's different everywhere. I'm also concerned about moving to a new place and not knowing anyone- is it easy to meet people as a nurse? Anyone who has relocated with some advice would be helpful. Thanks!!

I haven't relocated myself but have met some nurses who have. We had a nurse in her early 20s from somewhere like Indiana who just happened to pick SC to move to and work after doing research on the internet. We kinda wondered if she'd make it with her being so young and here all alone. She did wonderful and is still here after about 3 years.

A couple of summers ago, I went to California through an agency for the experience of being a travel nurse. The agency I used didn't require a contract and I told them I only wanted to go for a couple of weeks, which I did. While there, I met nurses from all over the US who'd done the same and liked it (and the money, lol) so much, they decided to permanently relocate there.

I relocated as a semi new grad from Kansas to San Francisco. Although I'm not single (I've been married for almost 11 years), it was a big decision for me, too. I moved in October 2005 and don't regret it at all! I'm still working at the same hospital and the pay and benefits are excellent.

As far as meeting people, I believe you won't have any problems. I immediately bonded with a couple of nurses and a unit clerk upon hire.

Good luck on your decision and let me know if you plan on moving to California. If it's in the SF area, I could give you suggestions on where to live, work, etc.
