Help! - Science Courses

Hello all,

I am about to take prerequisite courses and I'm having difficulty in deciding what courses I should take first and the combination of courses as well. This is my plan...

Summer Minimester 2008 (3 week course): Growth and Development
Summer 1 2008 (6 week course): Chemistry
Summer 2 2008 (6 week course): Anatomy & Physiology I

Fall 2008: Anatomy & Physiology II
Fall 2008: Microbiology
Fall 2008: Nutrition

That's it! So is this a suitable order of classes? Your advice and suggestions will be greatly appreciated!! PLEASE HELP!
Thank You!

Re: Science Courses

As a nurse educator, I'd recommend that you see your academic advisor. No one here knows the prereqs at your institution.

Re: Science Courses

hi, I am in the same position you are. I am in the process of compleating my science classes. But I think your Fall classes are a lot. Unless you have every single moment to study for those class. Many people find that just taking one class at a time can be a struggle. So I would maybe reconsiter it, if you have a family/job/ other obligations.... Plus you want to do VERY well in all of your classes and if you don't think you can pull an A or B at the lowest then I would suggest not taking them all at once. Good Luck on whatever you choose..

Re: Science Courses

Kudos for thinking in advance... it's never good when someone waits till the last minute and random classes have piled up. Obviously your advisor can help, but if you CAN take them in any order (other than A&P 1 before 2 of course), all the classes are offered in all the semesters, and you have to get them all in in summer and fall, here's what I would do, reflecting back on my own experience with pre-reqs (though chem isn't required at my school so I don't know its specifics):

Minimester: Growth and Development
Summer 1: A&P 1
Summer 2: A&P 2

Fall 08: Chem, Micro, Nutrition

Here was my thought process: 3 weeks is not enough time for any other class than G&D IMO. Summer is SUCH a great time to get A&P behind you - then you only have that ONE class to concentrate on, and you will have just finished the first part before starting the second. While micro was no walk in the park, there's no doubt that A&P is the hardest pre-req, and the most important to learn well - it's amazing how much you will use A&P on a day-to-day basis once you start nursing classes. This leaves Fall 08 to be a tough semester - but like I said, I'm assuming you have to get all these in by Spring 08. If there are any other classes mentioned that you haven't taken, like sociology/psych, it would be great to separate chem and micro. I did micro and nutrition together (plus 3 other classes) and survived... I think as long as you are diligent about studying and stay ahead of things you will do fine.

GOOD LUCK!! It's ALL worth it!!

I am also working on my pre-reqs. I was/am required to take the science classes in the following order:
CHM, AP I, AP II, Micro

A&P I covers a little CHM but I think you'll be fine with taking it at the same time. CHM is pretty easy but A&P I required a lot, a lot of studying.

I agree with the previous post that A&P II and Micro may be too much at one time. I am taking A&P II in Fall 2008 and Micro in Spring 2009. We cannot take them both at the same time.

Hope this helps!

Re: Science Courses

I started taking the "easier" classes like sociology and nutrition and if both work out fine, I should be able to get A for both (finishing in May). In this way, I would be able to get myself motivated and pick up my momentum / inertia to continue with the other science classes. Hopefully i will be able to obtain good GPA to qualify for application into other progs. later.

The feeling of incomprehension and doubt is inevitable, esp. after many years since I went to high school. I always believe in an effective plan in everything I do, be it career or studies. When i did my AA it worked !!!

Taking English 1A and Anatomy for summer, and planning for Physiology and Microbiology for fall, Psychology, Chemistry and speech classes in Spring 09.
