sad, lost job due to being in hospital...

has this happened to anyone else? In the past year I've lost three jobs due to illness. I had surgery and then was in the hospital two different times. I also left two additional jobs due to unsatisfactory working conditions. I've been going to college and working as a cna and home health aide. I've also worked as a tutor and at a deli. So yes I've had alot of jobs in the past 5 or so years, even more so in the past year. Currently, I am soon to become an LPN, even have an interview soon. Ok; so my surgery was for my gallbladder and being in the hospital was for mental health. I've been good with my medication, see the doctor, and go to counseling. I also see a support manager for life skills. I'm a very intelligent woman, many accomplishments, and have been able to go to school and work. I'm hoping to get out on my own, good job, and keep my health in check. Family stress and health problems have also had me worried. and my friend is not well. so there are alot of factors. my question is are there any other nurses that have been through similar circumstances and persevered? I'm not crazy by any means as far as mental health treatment.

just keep yourself well
get the rest that you need
look after your health

you've been busy, accomplishing things, working, studying -- then your health requires attention

keep your priorities
you know that you are intelligent

Re: sad, lost job due to being in hospital...

I've lost two jobs due to health issues too. Both times I was out too long for the hospitals. My surgeon didn't want me back doing such difficult work yet but amazingly in the nursing shortage neither hospital tried to hold on to me. The second time (and second hospital) I was fired 3 days post-op, talk about get well wishes! They both told me they'd re-hire me but after being treated that way i didn't want their jobs. You're not crazy, and you're not alone either!

Re: sad, lost job due to being in hospital...

yes, i just lost my job a couple months ago (after being there 6 years) because i needed more medical leave for a cancer diagnosis. i underwent a hysterectomy right over New Years, then gave notice to my DON. the first day i talked to anyone about it, the Administrator told me they would grant me 6 weeks off as a favor. Well, the following day they told me that no, I was terminated. Don't know how a DON can override a Administrator, but that's what happened.

I missed a lot of time over the past two years prior due to severe chronic pain in my back. I had cut my days to just 3 per pay period and that's all I could do due to my multiple health issues and severe fatigue. I did a lot of extra things for this place, but when new DON came in, she was on a mission and she got me.

I don't have any advice to give, but I am very sorry this happened to you. Really opened up my eyes to how things can change in a moment.

Re: sad, lost job due to being in hospital...

I think the really sad part of this whole thing is that we expect more from hospitals. After all, we're caring people and thats why we do what we do. We expect them to know and understand that things happen and healing often doesn't happen immediately. But, through my experience I've realized that hospitals are a business and it all comes back to the bottom line. Very sad but very true. So, I try to look at it now that I don't owe them anything, as they feel they owe me nothing!
