Concerns - Pre-Nursing Student with Back and Knee Pain

I'm just looking for some advise......

I'm a pre-nursing student with back and knee pain. I've had several x-rays and they've come back normal. I'm taking prescribed pain relievers, muscle relaxers, and anti-inflamatory medications but I don't want to have to take these everyday. I am overweight and trying to lose weight but it's difficult to excercise because I'm in so much pain. I could barely stand up in lab to dissect a pig. Has anyone gone through this? Had x-rays that came back normal? Have any suggestions? Know of anything that could be wrong with me that wouldn't ordinarily show up in an x-ray? Know of any specialist I should try other than a chiropractor. I'm afraid I won't be able to make it through clinicals unless I'm "doped up" on Vicoden. I'll be starting NS in January.

Any suggestions would be helpful!

Re: Pre-Nursing Student with Back and Knee Pain

In all honesty, I would rethink nursing school. Yes, I know there are nursing jobs out there that don't involve floor work and lifting BUT you have to make it through clinicals to get the complete education.

I have sore knees and after four shifts my back hurt. The damp weather makes the bursitis worse and the heavy patients just wear me down.

Re: Pre-Nursing Student with Back and Knee Pain

i can't give medical advice.. but have you had a ct scan? is there anyway you can take physcal therapy? maybe some warm packs ot you back? i am worried about you making it through clinicals and lecture and the labs.. you have to be on top of your game..
you cant go to clinicals dooped up on vicodan. you's be dealing with sick people who needs a clear thinker. and for lecture you have to grasp what they are saying quicky and it's long and hard....

please maybe look into physical therapy .. something to help with the pain.. i wish you luck .. i don't want you to have long term pain

i am sure there will be some good replies that will be helpful.. please take care of yourself ... please keep me posted on how you are doing

OK, you can't go to clinical "doped-up on vicodin". You can't work as a nurse/take care of patients like that either.

These are questions that you should put to your doctor
