Do you attach the stat lock to the picc line first or secure the sticker down first and then clip it onto the picc line with the clips? I am guessing attach the clips and then pull off the sticky tabs to secure the lock to the skin.it is so tricky with those gloves on too! Any tips for a smooth picc line dressing change? Thanks

When placing a stat lock I peel off one side first and apply the stat lock to the skin. Then I clip the PICC on to it. Then I peel off the other half. THis way you can handle it with gloves without having eveything stick. THe biggest tip for PICC dressing changes is apply tape to hold down the distal end(s) before removing the dressing. You don't want everything flopping around and dislodging. also pay attention to the amount of PICC exposed. Firstly that should be documented. Second you want to make sure that the amount stays the same, you don't want to accidentally pull out or PUSH IN. I've had nurse tell me that some PICC came out so they pushed it back in. THe part exposed is no longer sterile.

Thanks for your tips ... My question was actually also in part because of that unwanted pistoning effect... I figured if you clipped it first you could then place the sticker down without pulling on the line ...if you set the sticker too far from the insertion point you might end up pulling on the line to line up the posts.... I am going to try your suggestion. Also do the hospital picc dessing trays have any alcohol preps to release the sticker...the home care kits don't and it makes it difficult to do a sterile dessing..we only have steristrips statlock and skin prep in our kit and we have chlorhexidine swabs we stand up and sterile gloves. I have heard you use clean gloves to remove dressing and statlock and at that point could open the unsterile packaging to get at the alcohol swab to remove the adhesive ...at what point do YOU don the sterile gloves? Hope this was understandable!! Thanx

Our kits do not have alcohol preps, but the sticker comes off pretty easy without any adhesive remover. I always use regular gloves to remove the old dressing and statlock then put on mask and sterile gloves to clean and put on new dressing.
