I worked in ophthalmology several years and scribed while the MD verbalized what he/she saw under the lens. We had a format that was easy to remember and allowed me to ask for information if the MD forgot to mention something. However, we were dealing with only one organ. We did use EMR, a software package espcially for ophthalmology. My training was on-the-job at first, but I did get my nursing license while there. I also assisted in surgery. A non-nurse could do this with a course in medical terminology. We encouraged our non-nurses to be opthalmic technicians, a certification available thru a national organization.
