Re: Patient Reactions

My fiancee and I are both RN's and sometimes work together. It seems, in my experience, that pts w/ large families like men better. I am not sure why, but this has been my observation. I think it's because they take the time to explain things more in depth and women are very task oriented. I don't think gender would matter, except for labor/ delivery. I could see some women being uncomfortable but thats their issue- not yours.

What bashing? This has been an intelligent conversation so far.

As a helpless patient, I admit I was a little wary of allowing that big guy to take care of me, but to my surprise, he was gentler than almost all of the women nurses who cared for me.

Re: Patient Reactions

As a guy, I've only had one issue as a nurse; and that was during OB rotation in school. One pt's husband had the issue: not the pt herself! He didn't want ANY other man "seeing" his wife. Kinda cute sentiment from him, actually.

The funny thing is that the NM of the unit wanted to hire me to work in the Nursery and on PP....

The only other thing is the little old ladies - they all seem to think I am the doctor initially - but they are often my favorite pts once they realize that I am their nurse.

Re: Patient Reactions

By the time I finished giving birth to my first child, half the medical personnel in the state of New jersey had a turn standing between my legs. Modesty flew out the window, and has yet to return. I couldn't have cared less who took care of me, just as long as I was well taken care of. Also, just because a woman has breasts doesn't mean she knows 1) how to breastfeed, and 2) how to teach someone else how to do it. While some women might not want a man to bathe her, I bet there are just as many that would prefer a man...I just would like a bath and nice back massage, thank you
