Nephew Interested In Nursing Career

My nephew will be graduating from a High School Nursing Program in the Spring and would like to continue his career in nursing. He will be eligible to sit for the LPN boards in NY State in October.

We are looking for a program where he can continue his education without retaking all the classes he has already taken to accomplish the LPN certification. I have contacted many of the universities (UCF and Rutgers) and they require he take 2 yrs prerequisites then go into the RN nursing program as a junior. As you can tell this is a waste of time and money.

The community college bridge programs have been suggested, can anyone provide any additional information. He is currently 17yrs old, attending Curtis High School in Staten Island, NY...and is an excellent student.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Nephew Interested In Nursing Career

My mother got her bachelors degree and well, I thought to myself wouldn't this be neat to do the same thing? However, I was so disillusioned by the amount of reading and little practical clinical experience required at the university so I chose to quit and reapply at a community college...I was very HAPPY I did!
Your nephew can always finish his Bachelors once he has attained his associates degree and work will help him possibly pay for this (pay part or all of his tuition, books). Think of all the money he will save by doing so! I know that a lot of folks come from ignorance thinking that a university education is superior. In some ways it is, no doubt, but the community college trains very qualified nurses. I just hope you consider this option, since a university may not provide the clinical skills/hands-on as comprehensively as a community college would.

Re: Nephew Interested In Nursing Career

Thank you so much. I did not discount it as all...I know that community college can provide a quality education and it will be an advantage for him. He is currently doing his clinicals for graduation and he loves the work and hasn't given any thought to a specialization as of yet. Gave me a great description of his first C-Section (teetee a nurse could not be...), however I was able to get caught up in his excitement and I can tell this is a passion for him. I just want to make sure I am giving him the best advice possible and I didn't feel repeating classes in a state university was the best I could do.

Re: Nephew Interested In Nursing Career

Curtis High School located in Staten Island, NY, has an LPN program that prepares students for their LPN state board exam upon graduation. My understanding is there are not many, however this has been a Curtis Staple for several decades and has turned out qualified, nurses.

My nephew is currently (as a senior), doing a week of clinicals at Staten University Hospital, and one week class room studies. He will complete the necessary clinicals throughout the summer and be certified to take his State Boards in September.

Wow. I've heard of people taking their health care aide diploma in high school, but not that.
