I am interviewing for a new job next week. I worked at a hospital prior to my current job in home health. When I left the hospital I planned to work per diem and had given my two weeks notice to go from full time to per diem. After starting my new job I realized I was not going to have time to work per diem at the hospital. I left the per diem position without giving two weeks notice and was told that I would not be eligible for rehire. I am hoping that this will not come back to haunt me while I interview for new jobs. Should I tell them about this in the interview? Or should I wait to explain if they check my references and ask what happened? I have since learned from this experience and do not intend to repeat this again. I am open to any comments or suggestions. Thanks.

It's a tough call. Since the hospital job wasn't your most recent one, the interviewer may not ask you about the circumstances surrounding your departure. I probably wouldn't volunteer that you're not eligible for rehire, but if they ask you, be honest, and make sure to emphasize the line in your posting: "I have since learned from this experience and do not intend to repeat this again." You will not be asked if you are eligible for rehire, but if they check your background they may find out and ask you. Don't volunteer the info but if asked be honest. Depending on how long ago it was, they may not even check.
