liability insurance

by macarmy

Do any of you have professional liability insurance other than what your employer provides? When I was in nursing school, we were required to have our own coverage. Now that I'm out in the working world, I'm wondering if I should look into liability insurance. Just in case.

Your employer's insurance protects THEM, not you (no matter what they might say).

I used NSO when I worked med-surg. Less than $90/year.

You can do a google search for nurse malpractice insurance and get other ideas, as well as checking the ads in some nursing mags. The main thing you want to watch for is the companies that stop covering you when your policy runs out, even for events that happened while you did have coverage but weren't brought up until later. Otherwise, I've not run into any scams.

I wouldn't rely on either my union or my employer for help. I carry my own liability insurance and appreciate the peace of mind that it gives me for less than $100/year.

I've had my own malpractice insurance with NSO (Nursing Service Organization) since 1989 and have never had any problems. $89.00 per year and the price hasn't increased since I can't remember when, although the coverage continues to increase nearly every year.

Although I've never (Thank Goodness) needed to file a claim or need to even ask them a question or for advice, etc., I feel certain they are a very good company with a very respectable reputation.

I would NEVER EVER expect my employer's pitiful excuse for their version of malpractice insurance for me to be of any real benefit if push came to shove!! I have heard too many stories and seen too many times when the hospital protects itself and its physicians at the expense of the more easily replacable nurses!!! Sad but true!

Yes, by all means opt for carrying your very own malpractice insurance policy!!!! Speak with some nurses who have been in practice a while and I bet you'll find the savvy ones carry their own insurance and they will be glad to let you know who their insurance company is.

We must do all we can to protect ourselves. It's a dog eat dog world out there... bottom line.

Reality sets in, doesn't it?

Here's hoping you'll never need the services provided by nursing malpractice insurance!!! Murphy's Law.....

The union bail you out?

You people in the UK have an interesting sense of humor.

Nursing unions don't work that way here. It is everyone for him/herself when it comes to malpractice insurance (along with nearly everything else).

Default Wouldn't be without it.
As cheap as it is, I'd recommend carrying it as a student, too.
