I've had my own malpractice insurance with NSO (Nursing Service Organization) since 1989 and have never had any problems. $89.00 per year and the price hasn't increased since I can't remember when, although the coverage continues to increase nearly every year.
Although I've never (Thank Goodness) needed to file a claim or need to even ask them a question or for advice, etc., I feel certain they are a very good company with a very respectable reputation.
I would NEVER EVER expect my employer's pitiful excuse for their version of malpractice insurance for me to be of any real benefit if push came to shove!! I have heard too many stories and seen too many times when the hospital protects itself and its physicians at the expense of the more easily replacable nurses!!! Sad but true!
Yes, by all means opt for carrying your very own malpractice insurance policy!!!! Speak with some nurses who have been in practice a while and I bet you'll find the savvy ones carry their own insurance and they will be glad to let you know who their insurance company is.
We must do all we can to protect ourselves. It's a dog eat dog world out there... bottom line.
Reality sets in, doesn't it?
Here's hoping you'll never need the services provided by nursing malpractice insurance!!! Murphy's Law.....
