I have 2 Q.

1. I have been a stay at home mom for 11 years and have tried to take classes here and there. I have completed 6 with good grades, but have around 8 W's. These are due to my hubbys schedule or just not being able to attend classes. I know it does not look good but will this hurt me?

2. I recently moved back to Northern Calif and am going to the JC I attended in 89. I was 17 years old and took I believe a semester and the grades are not good. I know these will be combined with my other schooling and I will be applying to this school's RN program. I feel like I should not even try due to my issue. I can buckle down now and get great grades. My school has the lottery for RN and you must have a 3.0 in Pre-reqs to apply.

Any advice?

You need to speak with someone in the nursing department and/or the schools admit counselor. With nursing school positions at a premium and many with wait lists it is likely you will not be at the top of the list. See what they can advise you to do. Are there other types of occupations that you are interested in? You might start taking the pre-reqs that can get you into nursing school but also into things like xray, ultrasound, lab, etc. "that way you have some other options if you do not want to wait a long time to get into nursing school.

I don't know if it is the same everywhere, but W's are not even looked at here with regard to your GPA. I was told by my counselor that they don't pay a lot of attention to them these days because of the increased number of students returning to college who have families and other situations... The majority of students applying aren't necessarily 18 and 19 any more
I don't have much to add regarding your second question except to speak to your academic advisor and see what he/she suggests. I definitely wouldn't assume that you won't be accepted into the program... go have a talk with them and see what your options are.

When I first started back to school I had a terrible GPA and F's because I didn't even bother to withdrawl back in the day. I returned on a mission, got all A's my GPA went up,up,up and I got into NS on my first try.

It can be done, you just have to find out what your school requires and go for it. Good luck

It all depends on how bad you want it. When I decided to go to nursing school I had a 1.69 GPA. From a LOT of courses. (somewhere around 70 Semester hours) I went for it got accepted and graduated with a 3.4 GPA without repeating more than 2 courses.

Nothing is impossible it is just a matter of what it is worth to you. If it is worth enough to no obstacle is too big. If it is not worth it to you than any thing insignificant will be a huge obstacle.
