Smile I am 34 and I want to be a Nurse when I grow up!

Hello Everyone!

I am new to posting on the boards but I have been a lurker for a while now.

At 34 years old I have decided to go back to school and pursue my dream of becoming a nurse. Is it too late? Should I join an LPN program or go directly to an RN program?

What is your experience?

Thanks!

Hello Jayee

Hurray for you. Its never too late. I am also 34 looking to start the nursing program in the near future. I am currently taking my pre reqs for a BSN. At my age I felt it would be better for me to directly become an RN. The choice is yours of course and LPN is also a great start. It depends on the time you want to spend at college. Good luck to you.

Re: I am 34 and I want to be a Nurse when I grow up!

Hi welcome to the forum,

I also am 34 and started RN school, ASN, this year. I will graduate in summer 2009 and am SO excited that I FINALLY took the plunge. My program is only 2 years so I wanted to go this route so I could get into being a nurse as quickly as possible. I will get my BSN and Masters in the next few years while I am working.

GOOD LUCK

Thumbs up Re: I am 34 and I want to be a Nurse when I grow up!

Jayee,

I am so excited to hear of your interest in entering the nursing profession. I am currently a nursing student entering my second year in January 2008, and hopefully graduating December 2008. I started nursing in my early twenties, had somethings happen in my life to set me back, and then I jumped on my dream wagon and got into the program. You are never too old to do anything! I am 30, and enjoying every minute of it! Depending on what state you reside in, it is really important to do well in your prereq's, because some schools use that as one of the qualifications to apply. Where do you live? What type of nursing are you interested in? I went the CC route, because money was an issue for me. There are lots of options, scholarships, financial aid, and everything! I wish you the best, and that you pursue nursing!!

No way are you too old! I just turned 50 (aarrgggg) and have been getting my pre reqs and general ed stuff out of the way, hoping to be accepted to an ADN (RN) program next fall. I admit that I feel ancient, but even in my pre req courses, at least half the students were in their 30s. I think that is even more likely to be the case in actual nursing school. You would fit right in.

My daughter (17) gets mad at me when I tell her that I feel old, and she points out that in a couple of years I'll be 52 anyway, so why not be a 52-year-old nurse, if that's what will make me happy. I'd say that goes double for you, young thing that you are.

Way to go! You WILL NOT regret your decision to go to nursing school. I graduated at 32, and love it! LVN/LPN's have alot of limitations, so I recommend going right through an RN program. There are alot of good ADN programs out there that train excellent nurses.

Good luck!

Thanks for the good wishes! It feels great to know that I am not alone at finally choosing a career in my 30's.

I will then move forward and research to join the RN program instead of the LPN. If I am going to spend 2 to 3 years in nursing I might as well go all the way!!! eeek, scary! hahahahaha
