Hitting the bookstore...

Hi there!!!

I am only starting pre-recs in August but I am looking for some books that offer me a preview of the things I will learn in NS. Nothing too over my head but something to "prime my brain."

I am in a totally different career (radio) so I want to start orienting as soon as possible, plus I have the time to read right now.

I am getting the A&P the East Way today when I hit the bookstore. Many something with nursing fundementals? Any suggestions?

Ummm, am I jumping the gun on this? I figure you can never be too prepared, right?

Re: Hitting the bookstore...

Get "How to Survive and Maybe even love nursing school " It is comical, but truthful. It is not a book that is like a textbook, but for fun. I read it before I started nursing school and I really enjoyed it. Plus you will read SOOOOOO much in nursing school I wouldn't jump the gun on all that stuff just yet. Have some fun before the chaos starts haha. Good luck with pre reqs

If you are a visual learner, get the coloring books to go along with your science classes. The anatomy coloring book really helped me with some of the systems, for others I didn't need to use it.
Only one of the bookstores around here (Borders) has a very good selection of nursing stuff but I love to go there to look at everything they have and sit down to look at a few books that look helpful.
I also bought Mosby's medical dictionary. It has interesting pictures and I like to look through it to see if I know any of the words.
The most fun I have had is with my stethoscope and cheap little blood pressure cuff. I make all my kids and hubby let me practice BPs and listening to heart and lungs.

Re: Hitting the bookstore...

There are 2 books that I found really good they will start you out the and all they are from the same serious of books.
They are from Prentice hall nursing reviews and rationals
1. Nursing fundamentals
2. Pathophysiology

I just graduated this past May from an ADN program and, and the fundamentals was a required book for my first semester of nursing school and it was great. I myself bought the whole series for my own reading and found it to give the bare bones information about every thing. They put it in a outline form and left out all the crap that I thought the nursing books put in. I felt that in the nursing books for the programs they tended to put what could have been said in one page into 4 pages. That is one thing these books do they cut out all the extra crap and tell ya the base stuff.

That being said I did the reading from the required books but i used these books as my references and used them to get the understanding i found lacking in the school books.
