Here is a stupid HIPAA question.

If a patient is being admitted to a nursing home and the home needs to call the family, but does not know how to get them and you know how, what can you do?

1. Nothing - pretend you don't know
2. Call them yourself
3. tell your manager or a charge nurse that you know how?
4. None of the above?

Please help.

Either 2 or 3. It is not a HIPAA violation to admit that you know a pt or the family. If the family didn't know the pt was there or you shared medical info, that would be a violation.
