Great link, Leslie. Thanks for posting it.

You are going to be fine, hon. A picnic it ain't, but it's not the torture it's made out to be. Take a support person whose only job it will be to keep you relaxed if you need to.

Also, wiggle your toes during the pelvic. I don't know why but it helps.

Every time I have 'that' appt, I always tell my gyn, "Y'know, I really hate this." He told me, "Arwen, if I had a nickel for every time I've heard a lady say that, I could retire in style right now." So you're not alone in disliking the very thought. But you will be ok.

Don't let anyone scare you - it isn't that bad.

My mom and grandma had me scared so badly that I got hives . . I had no idea until the gyno asked me "How long have you had those hives?".

Afterwards, I went over and chastised my mom and granny . . . . how dare they scare me so.

My 19 year old daughter is going for her 1st appt too. Thanks for that link.

Re: gyno appt

Coming from someone who has constant ovary problems and see my obgyn on pretty much a monthly basis...it is really not as bad as it is made out to seem. I usually bring my mom or SO with, mostly for my problems, not so much the yearly thing, but to be honest, as weird as it sounds, it helps me to have someone that I know cares about me there, even if it is just to hold my hand. My first appointment, my mom waited outside in the waiting room for the question portian, and then when my dr did the actual exam she came and and held my hand, and stayed up by my head. It was very comforting for me. Granted I was 16, but it was still nice.

Re: gyno appt

my (then) 17 yo dtr, had her first gyn exam at her high school.
a female np was performing them.
dd was glad it was a female, and it was a positive experience for her.
the np did a lot of educating.

I'd definitely go with a nurse practitioner. I see one too. She is great.

Re: gyno appt

arrrrg, these types of posts keep coming up and reminding me I need to bite the bullet and get it over with.

Never been and I am 20, and I have a tumor disorder that puts me at a higher risk of cancer.

Need to talk to one of my docs and get recommendations on who to go to.

Also need to talk to my mother, she thinks you don't need to until you are married (aka having sex)

Re: gyno appt

I'd suggest bringing your mom, sister or friend in with you. That helps a lot especially for the first appointment.

The whole thing takes about 10 minutes even though it feels like an eternity. lol You will be shocked when you see how quick it is.

I need to go too.

Your mother just needs to be educated that cancer, etc. doesn't have any pre-requisites. Nuns can get cancer.
