Re: Graduate Nurses vs. Experienced Nurses (Promise to be funny!)

I've never seen it before and it made me laugh -- I've been a nurse almost 25 years, and I honestly have to say, most of the things are so true..........Thanks ! Very cute --- I'm printing it and posting it at work. We have 3 new grads on my unit and lots of experienced nurses. I think they will like it!

Talk about devouring your young. Keep in mind for each of the graduate nurses that walks on your unit, your patient load lightens. The experienced nurses are leaving in droves and the newbies out there are the only ones watching your back until you choose to leave also.So if humor is what you're looking for, try to summon some up the next time a GN asks/or does something you think is really dumb and remember we're just trying to follow in your footsteps so when you're service is done, we can fill that void.

Re: Graduate Nurses vs. Experienced Nurses (Promise to be funny!)

As one who has gotten in trouble over his sense of humor, from time to time--even on these boards--I can surely relate to those who say "lighten up!" Off-hand, it's hard to think of any sort of humor, save possibly puns, that doesn't "poke fun" at someone or something. To me, comedy is a celebration of the absurdity of life. Thus, when I refer to one of our neuro residents as my future fiancee, I neither intend to degrade women nor to actually propose marriage. Rather, my intention is to satirize the old stereotype of nurses just looking to marry a doctor, while noting in passing that she is quite pretty and a very nice person whom I would be proud and happy to have for a daughter. And, maybe sometimes she could have her friends to a sleepover, but if they were naughty, I might have to spank them...
But I digress. My point is, I think it is fair to distinguish between humor that points out what is ridiculous and humor that ridicules. The OP exaggerates both the naivete and idealism of the GN and the pragmatism and disillusionment of the experienced nurse. As a collegeague of mine used to like to say: "Soon you, too, can be jaded and cynical!" The humor lies not in the notion that GNs are stupid or that experienced nurses are lazy or heartless, but in the near-universal fact that as we mature, our priorities change. The jokes invites us, regardless of our experience level, to laugh at ourselves. In contrast, typical racial/ethnic/gender/sexual orientation jokes perpetuate derogatory stereotypes and invite us to ridicule others merely for being in some way different from those sharing the "joke."

Oh, I almost forgot my whole point, or a major portion of it, which was actually to largely agree with Tweety. I think when a joke, however innocently intended, offends, the proper response should be, "I'm sorry you were offended. That wasn't my intention." Which, I think, is about what the OP said. Telling someone to "lighten up" does seem to disrespect their sensitivities. Then, too, such a disclaimer would ring insincere regarding humor which is clearly malicious. On the other hand, refraining from jokes altogether would make the world a humorless place.

Thank you thank you thank you.

Indeed on a board with hundreds of thousands of readers no matter what you say is going to offend someone. Jokes just do that, because 99.999% of jokes is poking fun at someone. I wasn't implying one should remain humorless in order to be politically correct. I wasn't saying that one shouldn't take into consideration the intent. I wasn't saying the original joke wasn't funny.

A curt "lighten up it's only a joke" is a closed mind. A simple "really? your offended, tell me why.........", "I'm sorry........" . I got a "lighten up" recently when someone was telling jokes about starving Africans. I've gotten it before with other racist/homophobic jokes. Maybe I'm more sensitive to a "lighten up" because I get it sometimes, because I speak up or don't laugh. There's a lot of jokes I don't laugh at and I'm standing my ground and won't people please. I don't need to lighten up, and no the jokes weren't funny, and yes I have a sense of humer and laugh, joke and kid around frequently. I'm quite fun to work with and my friends love me. Just don't expect me to laugh at every joke that comes my way. More importantly I have to respect when others state they don't think what I think is funny. No need for me to shove it down their throat with "I don't understand how you can't think it's not funny." Now I am getting repetative. I'm outta here, and while I'll continue to read this thread, I won't bore you guy anymore nor shove my opinion down anyone's throat. Woo hoo!

Just wanted to say thanks for getting my point and saying so.

A simple joke thread eh fellas?

Not everyone has to love the joke. Humor is 99% offensive to someone or the other - blonde jokes, lawyer jokes, cop jokes etc. etc. etc. etc.

Lets leave it at that, yeah? Can we fight over something else, please?

Roy, I honestly don't think anyone's fighting here. I think the thread has been very mature and light hearted, that it's strayed a bit off topic shouldn't be a problem. Of course it's gone into the realm of non-nursing and that can be a mods ace in the hole for closing it.

Maybe I'm being sensitive because your "A simple joke thread fellas?" sounds condescending and akin to "lighten up", which you know bugs me.

Obviously, as I've been the main poster any comment about the thread is directed at me. But that's o.k. I can dish it out and take it too.

As usual, it doesn't take me long to break my vow to bow out of a thread and keep my mouth shut. LOL
