Also WallMart has their "house brand" meters and strips that are much cheaper than brand name strips. Used to be about $15 for 50.They are accurate and really good to use for a new diabetic who is testing alot.

My hospital also gives out free Glucometers, but as others have already said, it's usually the strips that are so expensive.
A couple weeks ago, a newly diagnosed pt needed one and the dietician asked if the pt has health insurance. She said she always recommends the ReliOn brand from WalMart for those pts that don't have insurance. I just looked it up, the Glucometer is $8.88 and a 50-pack of strips is $21.94.
