Geriatrics without working in a nursing home?

Hi there. I am looking for some input about where I can/will work when I graduate. I have always wanted to work in Geriatrics, though do not necessarily find the idea of a nursing home appealing. I will certainly do some time there to get some experience, but would love some ideas as to other places I could be helpful. Thanks in advance!

You find the primary hospital population to be geriatrics unless you work on a ped or OB unit.

I work in an acute care setting at a hospital. The majority of my patients are elderly. I have to say that they are usually my favorites.

I love working in a nursing home. You can go work in a doctors office or hospital but what other place could you go to know your residents. Hear their stories of how they were when the were young. And see how they are know and be a part of their life and staying with then through there decline and then the end of there life. Just not be there for a couple days. Daily caring for them, months, years. Even on holidays. They become family.

Assisted living and memory care facilities are less heavily regulated and generate a little less paperwork, and the residents are usually great to work with. I'd recommend getting some NH experience first, though, because being THE only nurse for 60 or 70 residents and working with unlicensed and uncertified caregivers takes a lot of critical thinking skills. Good luck! I love geriatrics too.
