I guess what I REALLY MEAN IS- a woman can go out and marry some rich guy and live happily ever after and not even raise any kids, live off his money, spend his money, and that is pretty okay

so what you are saying is, if a man marries a woman and doesnt work, with or without raising kids for the rest of his life and lives of her money, that is a common or socially acceptable situation????

If a woman marries a man, and doesn't raise kids, that is socially acceptable , although not as common today. But regardless of what you say, It is not a realistic option for a man. I am guessing the 5 men you know are temporary situations while they get better jobs or the kids are old enough to goto school.

Pay: The Gender Gap

A woman's work is never done. Though you might not know it to look at her paycheck.

According to U.S. Census Bureau statistics, women make on average 25 percent less than men. This is, however, a marked improvement over 1970, when women made 41 percent less.

While this is certainly unfair and unjust, being that I am not a woman, its not my fight. We live in a society of opurtunistic "me-ists" Affirnative action has resulted in penalties against people who may have never oppressed anyone. I used to be very idealistic and liberal. Now I am a realist. I have no problem taking more money then someone else for the same job. I want to get paid as much as possible. If that is because I am a man, thats fine with me. I have seen men give a bigger tip to a woman b/c she was pretty. Maybe she should have given it back b/c it was fair to the fat ugly waitress or the male waiter. My friend got offered a job at a law firm at much higher then many of her fellow law graduates, she beleives its partly due to her implants. Is that unfair? Maybe, but shed be a fool not to take the money and she laughs about it. She also know they won't keep her on because she has a nice chest and she will have to work hard as a new lawyer. That person who walked out due to unequal pay is a crusader, and ridiculous IMO. If I were a woman, this would make me angry, to my fellow men who want to go and equalize pay out, I understand, but seriously disagree.

Let the flaming begin

Oh my goodness, what century are YOU living in? there are several at-home Dads around me and NO ONE assasinates THEIR "manliness" or character! And THIS is on a military BASE!!! Where exactly is it NOT "socially-acceptable" for a man to be at home caring for his kids in 2004? This is CERTAINLY very a POOR reason to justify men being paid more than women for equal work, experience and education. VERY poor. Besides, MANY women are single heads of household or some, such doctors or nurses, possibly earn MORE than their spouses do. Therefore, families are dependent on them. SO you are saying these families who depend on women earning a decent wage should suffer so a man who is trying to preserve his "socially acceptable standing" can be paid more? POPPYCOCK! The reasons for men earning more than women are NOT legitimate in this day and age, period. I can scarcely believe I am reading this garbage on a nursing professionals' board in the year 2004!

Didn't say it justifies, men being paid more., I didn't even imply that, I just thought it was an interesting point. I don't think there is anyhing that justifies anyone being paid more for the same work, its not ever fair. That being said, if I am the one who is being paid more, I am not going to complain about it.

I guess what I meant, as I edited above, is that it is not socially acceptable for a man to graduate, never have worked, with never having plans to work, and just to be a housewife only, even after the kids grow up. You know like the old MRS degree. Never heard of anyone getting an MR degree.
but on the other hand, the reverse is not true

Now, I would love to see you honestly argue that point. I admit, as I originally put it, itsounded bad, but that is not what I meant.

I disagree, period. I honestly argued the point in my prior post, if you read it. I say again: It is socially acceptable among mature adults who are busy minding their own business and realize families take many forms and sometimes roles are not "traditional" ..... And if others disagree or make gossipy comments, why should such a man care? If his kids are his focus and priority, believe me, he is way too busy to care. He has a LIFE. He is WAY too busy with daily activities involved in raising the kids to worry about immature backward-minded people who have nothing better to do than worry about others' choices and family lives. One question: DO YOU KNOW ANY at-home DADS? If not, try to get to know one. Maybe HE can fill you in on what it's like.

From this point, I guess, we will have to agree to disagree on this one. Peace out.

My friend is a stay at home dad, but only until he finishes his BSN degree, thats not what I meant. I don't care who does what to be honest with you, but are you going to tell me that if my parents told me I should try to marry a nice girl some day and raise her kids and goto daddy & me classes and that was my goal from a young age, that would be a regular occurence, and a real option?????? Tell me, please, "yes NP2BE, that is a real option for boys today I am not talking about what Should be, I am talkng about what is.
