A PA at work told one of our techs not to become a nurse because "they're all fat, miserable and all they do is complain about their jobs". At first I wasn't too happy with this ..... but then I can see how things look that way to him. Come to think of it, that describes about half of our staff. Perhaps nursing is simply an unhealthy profession.

Yes nursing is a very unhealthy profession.

Don't judge a day by the weather. Don't judge a book by it's cover. Don't judge your coworkers.

Generalizations are just that...general! We could take this a step farther by saying something all-encompassing (but maybe not quite correct) about PA's. Neither would be fair or appropriate.

As a nurse, I was fat, competent, compassionate and intelligent.

As a CNS, I am fat, competent, compassionate and intelligent too.

So...I think you have to take this with a grain of salt.

Well, you can obviously tell that this person is small minded and insecure. Don't listen to him, he has his priorities mixed up.

These sorts of generalisations help no-one & really shouldn't be given the space.

However, I think it's sad that anyone should think that of our profession in the first place. I'm not fat, I'm not miserable & I don't complain about my job all of the time (just some of it)

actually most of the nurses i work with are health nuts and skinny. i can only think of 3 or 4 that are considered obese. but, i have heard people say that all nurses are fat and miserable before so the comment doesn't surprise me. and as far as nursing being a unhealthy profession...your health is what you make it and we all have the ability to make choices ( apples or donuts...cheese fries or carrots)

Maybe it is my suspicious nature, but I sense maybe this is a dig at fat nurses (or fat people in general) disguised as a remark by a PA.

If this person really knew anything about nursing then they would also know that nurses grab what they can to eat when they are taking care of patients. There normally is no sit down, able to pick out a nice salad and fruit type of meal during working hours. On a overall basis nurses do not have the time to consume a nutritious lunch/dinner, But what they are guilty of is making sure this PA's patient's get the right diet and worry more about the intake of their patient rather than there own. I remembr not long ago a report coming out about Americans and weight, most of America has some sort of weight issue. I dont think it's just the people in the nursing profession. I think it's everywhere. There are to many fast foods and conveince foods out there and it's a busy world.

This problem is not just in nursing...unhealthy and overweight is EVERYWHERE!!!!! It's my understanding that 60% of the population is overweight. Small children are already victims of obesity, just take a look around your elementary schools. America is the fattest nation on this planet and researchers predict it will only get worse if people are not changing their life styles.
The automobile industriy plans to build bigger cars to accommodate the ever larger growing customers....just another way to make a profit and make cars even more expensive. Soon you'll pay $100.00 for a SUPER size pickup truck, let alone the gas you need to pay for to haul the pounds.
One thing is for sure, it will keep docs and nurses in business...somebody needs to take care of the ever growing number of patients suffering from illnesses that are a direct result of being overweight.
