do you use gloves all the time??

Hey guys!

here it goes... The other day at clinicals (I'm a student ) I witnessed a herione addict fake a seizure. Well, the nurses who responded to this incident were amazing. At first they thought she was Really having one but after 15 mins of "jerking and foaming at the mouth", they quickly called her bluff. Anyway, one thing that really gave me the "heebie jeebies" was that out of the 4 nurses that assisted, only ONE RN wore gloves!!

Now this pt has hep-b and c (which they all new about) but even the iv nurse wasn't wearing gloves! The pt had soo many needle sticks (from iv nurse cuz she couldnt find a vein) and at one point she Bled all over the nurse who was trying to hold the pt down. In school, it is drilled in our heads, glove, glove, glove for anything that involves bodily fluids so I was really shocked that they would put themselves at risk... So, later on I asked one of the RNs (very politely) why she chose not to wear gloves and she replied that she works better without them !!!! So, I was just curious.. Do you, as healthcare workers, wear gloves All the time.... be honest, now If you dont, what procedures do you do w/o gloves?

No I don't. I should, but I don't. It's a hard habit to start when you were taught without gloves.

I have noticed that certain nurses where I work wear gloves for everything--don't even walk through the door without putting them on. The MAs all wear gloves all the time too. I wear them when I am going to be doing something--changing them, changing sheets, etc., and during clinicals I wear gloves for all procedures like IVs and injections. But I don't wear them just for assessments (unless they have drainage of some sort). Of course if the patient is in isolation that's a different story.

I would wear gloves for the incident you mentioned-
I would wear gloves if any one was seizing- Unless I was in the field and didnt have any.

The pseudo seizure was an attemot to receive a desired madication, Am I right?

I have said this before and I guess I can repeat it:

It it is wet and it ain't yours, don't touch it.

Rule to LIVE by; learn it now. That said, to hold a hand or give human touch, of course I don't wear gloves.

No, I don't wear them every time I should. I don't use them for fingersticks...I would use them if someone were bleeding profusely. I always wear them if cleaning bodily fluids. I went to school before universal precautions and they are very hard to get used to.
