Worried - Do they really look down on you...

...if you go to med. school?

as of now I plan on applying to osteopathic med. schools when I am 25 (I am 20 now). I have heard from a few people that other nurses and medical professionals look down on you if you go to med. school after becoming a nurse.

Is this true?

I am a CRNA who works for a Medical School and have seen at least 7 prior nurses rotate through residencies here,, gen surg,,,dermatology,,, anesthesia.... neurosurgery.. and I have never ever ever seen ANYONE in any way denigrate their prior postition as a nurse.

Why would someone look down on you? I have no desire to go to med school. More power to those who do.

I have heard from a few people

Would those be other nurses?

If so, I am not the least bit surprised..... it is called the CRAB BUCKET MENTALITY OF NURSES for a very good reason.

no way. i'd have more respect for a MD who's walked in a nurse's shoes.

Have had the pleasure of working with several ER MDs who were RNs. No problems here.

Re: Do they really look down on you...

I have heard it from other nurses, advisers, teachers, pre-med students...

When I first heard it I thought it was strange because when I was growing up I always thought that's how it was supposed to go: Nurse ----> Doctor.

I think the clinical and floor time will make the transition into med. school much easier.

Re: Do they really look down on you...

I wouldn't worry too much about other people looking down on you or not. Just do what you gotta do and if you're happy with your choices and decisions who cares about their opinion?

I've never looked down on them. They're some of my favorite doctors. And some of the smartest I've ever met.

The ones I look down on are clueless people with a lackadasical approach to pt care who have no interest in changing and I have to ring orders and action out of them.
