I offer them a cookie...if they pay for it. This usually gets them smiling. If they are just being a jerk for the day I let them know directly that their attitude is out of line. They get better for a 'short' while. (until the next batch of double devils food chocolate chips are done)

I heard of one unit that put up a small white board and listed a doctor on their "Sh*t List." Other docs, being competitive, wanted to know what they had to do to get their names up there also!

Don't tell me that you people actually continue to take, change or try to prevent crap from any physician...........Simply tell the offending MD or anyother person that "I do not and will not tolerate your unprofessional, child like behavior, take your attitude elsewhere".

exactly jailhouse. Why should WE have to cheer them up, make them feel happy/good/whatever in order NOT to be abused? I agree totally.

Its more of a matter of keeping YOUR cool, not really trying to 'cheer up the doc'. If they want to be an *ss, let them, but I refuse to let it ruin MY day.

We do have one baby-doc that gets away with abuse of some staff, but that staff member lets it happen. (This is going to make some of you very angry) The doc actually put his finger two inches from the nurses face and said "I want you to shut up NOW". because he was dictating and couldn't hear himself think apparently. Even though a grievence was filed nothing happened-he continues to abuse certain staff in this way. I for one never take this kind of crap from any doc; baby-doc or ready to retire. They know this and resepect my assertiveness. My co-workers just stand slack-jawed at some of the things I have said to them when docs get pushy. But I refuse to be spoken to like a child or as if I had no education. I'm not there just to wipe and turn patients! This baby-doc has not yet learned that nurses can either make you or break you...but he will.

Sorry, but I don't see how this helps anyone get their jobs done better. Doesn't this actually widen the gap in communication between docs and nurses? It is a threatening statement and I really don't think you'll improve relations with communication like this.

I CERTAINLY keep my cool criticalcarenurse...but I refuse to have to try and cheer these people up, as some have suggested, in order not to be verbally abused. I do not care what is going for them at home or personally, really, any more than they do for me. We all have lives and issues/problems going on and as professionals, we keep them out of the work place. I am not gonna bend over to make them happy, just be professional and do my job.

Just out of curiosity, can you be more specific as to what you do assertively to stop this sort of thing from happening to you? I think there are many among us who could use the information. I am in earnest in asking. You said "some staff" get abused but you don't ....how do you stop it effectively for yourself? Thank you.
