Hello all! I was wondering if any of you (probably Derm office nurses see this most) have had any experience with administering Botox injections? If so, where did you get training, have you ever seen any nasty complications, and who in your office administers it (Docs, Rn's)? We're thinking of offering this as a treatment in our office, and I'm doing the research for getting this up-and-running. I've done searches on Botox, but all that comes up is patient info and advertisements for Doc's offices that provide this as a service. I've been unable to locate any educational classes about it for health care providers. Thanks in advance for any info you can give me!

Thanks Sunnygirl! I had actually already found all of the sites that you listed but the laserlease one, but still none of them are offering any classes at the current time. I guess since Botox has been out for a while, it's not a widely offered class now. Thanks for your help, though!

Hi all

I am an Aesthetic Nurse (RGN) in England.
At present in the UK we do not have any formal recognised training/qualification for administering Botox, although this could change in April 2007. The UK RCN however have recently published 20 recommendations for Nurses who wish to train in Medical Aesthetics. The RCN are also trying to implement degrees/diplomas in Aesthetic Nursing in the future.

In England, Nurses, Doctors and Dentists are allowed to administer Botox following a training day with a drug company or with a reputable practitioner experienced in Botox injections.

I trained with a Nurse Entrepreneur who has a Medicial Aesthetic Clinic in London. It cost me £5,000 pounds and a certificate of confidence was obtained.

In order to purchase Botulinum Toxin form a drug company a nurse will need a Doctors prescription and GMC number. Ideally the first consultation should be done by the prescriber or a detailed health assessment performed by the nurse that the doctor can review. The latter will depend on the doctor's/nurses relationship and is based on trust. The former is the recommended practice.

Common side effects are a brow/lid ptosis which may last from 2-13 weeks, eye drops are available to help alleviate this problems. The side effects are temporary as the Botulinum Toxins usually wears off within 12-14 weeks, hence the need for top up injections. One study reported headaches at 2%, anaphylactic reactions are very rare, although adrenalin should be available when treating clinits.

There are many courses in the uk available for nurses and Doctors. The average cost for a one day training course, £500-£1,500. Try using a google search using the keywords "Medical Aesthetic Training London UK".
