I worked a Fri-Sat night weekend plan in the late 80s-early 90s until the hospital abruptly terminated it. [They magnanimously said I could continue to work every weekend, but without any weekend benefit.] The plan was that I worked 24 hrs, was paid for 40, and had part time benefits and three paid weekends off per year. I am a single mom and so I felt like a full-time mom from Sunday morning to Friday night. Child care was a huge problem, of course, for those hours. It was hard to explain to people that I couldn't make some of their weekend functions, as my weekends off were booked a year in advance. OTOH, it got me out of things I didn't really want to do.
My world (financial, child care, and otherwise) was totally upset when the hospital pulled the rug out from under us (as well as other nurses who were on special plans), and let us all know we were worthless and expendable. Now that hospital is reaping what it sowed, in terms of needing massive incentives to get people to work.
