Am I dumb??

I'm sorry if I am wasting your time with silly questions....

So I applied for the nursing program at SFSU (It's actually in conjunction with Canada College for 2nd bach students (me).

I applied in November and won't find out until end March/first week April. I feel nauseous EVERY day just thinking about it.

My b/f says that I will be fine and he knows I'll get in. I think I am a great candidate (not to toot my horn), but I have wanted to be a nurse for *years*: I helped my mom raised my brother who was a near-drowning victim. He was 3 when it happen and suffered permanent brain damage from it. He died in 2001.

I have a 3.9, have worked in academic, research, and clinical medicine at UCLA, Stanford, and UCSF. I have volunteered a **ton**, too. I have great letter so rec.

My worry, though is that one of the "extra credit" supplemental criteria is having multicultural experience or speaking a second language. I am not FLUENT in another language, but know some German and Spanish.

I am afraid that because I am not fluent, I won’t get it and I will have to sit around for another year. I honestly think I am going to get an ulcer. There are 40 seats for over 300 applicants.

I get so sad thinking that I might not get in….

HELP!!!

No, I don't think you are dumb! I felt the same way last semester. I was in a similar situation with the school that I applied to. There are 22 openings every semester and over 300 who applied. I did get in and I start on the 17th! I don't speak any other language fluently but it would help. I did take a spanish class last semester that helped but I am not fluent but i got accepted.
You sound like you have a good background and good grades, the letters of reccomendation could only help! I know it is hell to wait for that letter but my guess is that you will get in. If you don't then just try again next semester. I know that is easier said than done but you will be ok!
I truly believe that everything happens for a reason so weather you get in this semster or next there is a reason why.

I hope this helps, just try not to go too crazy waiting!

Re: Am I dumb??

First, you need to learn there is no such thing as a silly (or dumb) question. The only way a question could be dumb would be if EVERYONE knew the answer. Second, you need to trust your boyfriend (unless he wants you to do something your daddy says no to, then say no ) he sounds like he knows you and your abilities. Third, are you willing to habla un pocito de espanol con un paciente? You know a little, try to learn a few nursing/medical related phrases and how to use them. You'll do fine.

Re: Am I dumb??

Dumb no, maybe a tad insecure. Sounds like you will make a great candidate for nursing school. I wouldn't worry about being bilingual, after all we are still in the USA and interpreters are available in all hospitals, even if it from an AT&T source. Good luck to you.

Re: Am I dumb??

The wait to find out if I'd been accepted into nursing school was harder than waiting on board results. You are completely normal and everybody I've known experiences all the same doubts and fears. If it is meant to be, you will get it.

Re: Am I dumb??

WhenI applied to nursing school (LPN and RN) I was told there were only a few seats and hundreds of applicants.
I got accepted to both schools on my first try (chose LPN at the time because it was a lot closer to home) and I'm certainly not "gifted." Not even close. They will tell you that everywhere, don't let it scare you.

Re: Am I dumb??

A second language was not a requirement for my school

there were 275 applicants for 65 seats, my gpa was 3.79 and I got in- try to relax otherwise you will be a puddle by April!

BTW- hug that bf of yours for his support and encouagement!

Re: Am I dumb??

I'm the one that's dumb compared to you! You have accomplished so much and you must be proud of that. I think all your other qualities will outshine that extra credit. If not, take a foreign language course. I've found that spanish is very helpful and is an asset to your resume. And it shouldn't be hard since you know some spanish.

I think you'll have no problems getting in. Good luck and stop worrying!

Sorry about your brother. That had to be hard since you were so close to him.
