I just finished a PN program. It was challenging but just how challenging would depend on a lot of different factors. I graduated from college with honors and did really well with the PN program as well but I certainly had to study.

Insofar as a gpa to get in: I supposed it would depend on the program. Around here you have to be able to pass the entrance exams.

You know what they say....The instructors don't mess around! You know how they have basic training for the army, I think of it that way only more mentally then physically. The program could be more difficult for any students who have never done CNA or any hands on experience caring for others. Because not only are they learning how to function as a nurse, but also at the same time trying to learn the skills. PN Programs you're learning everything from the basics. All that in a short amount of time. As for GPA upon entrances, I would also think it's based upon the school...

Unfortunately, in the LPN program where I taught, it seemed the only things needed were a pulse and a payor source. Some of my students were quite sharp, but others were barely literate. It made for a difficult teaching environment with such a wide range of abilities. Just for kicks, I took the entrance exam one day and found it quite easy.

I thought the work was challenging because of the sheer volume of it but it wasn't what I would call difficult. I think being older helped because the "critical thinking" they keep talking about just seems like good old fashion common sense to me. If it sounds like a good idea to you, I'd go for it.

At my school, there are about 200 applicants who take an entrance exam. After you pass the exam, there is a questionnare that you fill out which basically sums up your experiences with patient care and why you want to be a nurse. After that, about 35 people are accepted into the program. So no, at my school there wasn't a certain GPA; it was up to the school who they chose to accept.
I went into LPN school with NO patient care background (I had always worked in sales or customer service jobs), so I think the first semester was more difficult for me than other students who were CNA's or MA's. Learning the terminology, meds, etc can be overwhelming if it is all new to you!
Nursing school is tough, but you can get through it if you really dedicate yourself to learning and studying hard. Good luck

This is the same system that my school does, so it isnt only in one place. I'd say more but everything seems covered, good luck and good studying!
