Unhappy Advice....Going Before Board

I am having to go before the Florida Nursing Board Wednesday. I finished my LPN eduation in September. I had a drug overdose (very difficult time in life) and was diagnosed as bipolar. It was later decided that I wasn't bipolar and it was just stress related depression. I was told by my nursing department head that it was not a big deal to get my license. I am now having to go before the Florida Nursing Board to plead my case before I even get my GPN letter issued. I'm scared to death. I have excelllent reference letters from people who are aware of my professional ability. Can anyone give me advice or help me feel better about this?? I feel like I'm being put on trial for murder.....

Re: Advice....Going Before Board

i have a feeling that the bon will request a letter from a psychiatrist, stating that you are mentally competent to do nsg.
if you already have a psychiatrist and/or therapist, i would ask both to write you a letter on your behalf.

wishing you the best of everything,

leslie

Re: Advice....Going Before Board

Please try not to freak out. This is just the BON's way of making sure you are safe to grant a license to. In CA new applicants have to do the same thing under certain circumstances, including yours, and to my knowledge are rarely turned down. You may have to jump through a few extra hoops to get your license, but don't get discouraged. Whatever they tell you to do, just do it as quickly as you can. Good luck.

I just hope you are ok, this must be a stessful time for you and nursing is a stressful profession by all appearances (I'm still a student). Make sure that your number one priority is taking care of you, and that you are "ok".

Re: Advice....Going Before Board

Amazing. I have seen known drug addicts enter Nursing school and get their licenses without any trouble. Here is a person who had a bout with mental illness but is functioning well, is on meds, got through a tough time in her life, and now the Board wants to give her a hard time.

Hopefully, they will simply go by the letters of recommendation that you are going to ask your doctor and supervisor to give them and you will get your license without any further ado.
